THINGS TO CONSIDER WHEN HAVING YOUR CLOCK REPAIRED
There are several things to consider when having your antique, vintage
or modern clock repaired or serviced. Listed below are several factors
that you may find useful in the process. It is not intended that this
list be considered all-inclusive, as there are likely additional factors
that will be important to you. Ultimately, the decision to have your
clock repaired or serviced is a personal decision based upon many
factors.
The clockmaker—does the person that will repair or service your clock
have the requisite knowledge, skills and abilities necessary to do the
job;
The process—when overhauling your clock, does the person you trust to
carry out the service completely dismantle the movement, clean all
components, polish all pivots, peg all pivot holes and bushings, inspect
all parts for wear, replace or repair missing or broken parts, lubricate
and adjust the movement;
The guarantee—is the work performed on your clock guaranteed;
Referrals and Recommendations—is the person you trust to repair or
service your clock recommended by someone you trust or who has had a
positive experience with the clockmaker in the repair or service to
their clock;
The price—while the price of services rendered is certainly important,
it is the quality of service and extent to which the service is
guaranteed that is most important. The services of a skilled clockmaker
who stands behind his work and who treats your clock as if it were his
own are becoming increasingly harder to find and, therefore, should be
at the top of your list of things to consider when having your antique,
vintage or modern clock repaired or serviced;
THE STANDARD OVERHAUL PROCEDURE USED BY MY CLOCK SHOP
At MY CLOCK SHOP we take the following steps to restore your clock to
proper operating condition:
First the clock is examined in the case in order to determine if the
hands are properly seated and not rubbing against the glass or binding
against each other; the movement is then checked to determine if it is
adequately secured within the case and if the pendulum is free of
obstruction. A test winding of the mainsprings and activation of the
strike or chime mechanism is also conducted while the movement is still
within the case.
The movement is next removed from the case, examined for evidence of
missing or damaged parts and for signs of wear. It is at this stage that
an estimate for cost of repair or service can be given.
In cases where it has been determined that the clock is in need of an
overhaul, the movement is dismantled. At this stage each component of
the movement is again examined for evidence of damage and for signs of
wear.
The next step involves a complete and thorough cleaning of the movement
while still disassembled, thereby ensuring that all surfaces become
devoid of oil, grease and foreign material.
All necessary repair work and steps in the overhaul process are next
carried out including but not limited to: polishing pivots; installing
bushings in worn pivot holes; checking and lubricating mainsprings;
checking and replacing cords, cables or chains; testing and correcting
wheel & pinion meshing; and cleaning pivot holes and bushings with peg
wood.
The movement is next reassembled; tested under power; regulated for
correct timekeeping; adjusted as necessary and lubricated. Once we are
satisfied that the clock is operating properly in our test stand, it is
reinstalled in case, put in motion and allowed to run under normal
operating conditions. Final adjustments are made as necessary.
Customers who have their clocks professionally cleaned, lubricated and
adjusted by MY CLOCK SHOP receive a
full one year guarantee. Extended warranty plans are also available.
